Solo Traveling Changed My Life

And it can change yours too

It is safe to say that from a young age I have always been curious, adventurous and excited by new things. I recall funny memories from my childhood, such as picking up a baby grass snake whilst exploring the grass in Portugal (and getting bitten), to lifting up rocks in English forests to look for frogs. I had an urge and desire to venture into unknown territory, and its a feeling that has stayed with me to this day. Inevitably, the excitement and thrill of solo traveling has become an important part of my life today.

Funnily enough, I only started solo traveling last year. I never really got to do it before because of a whole host of reasons — lack of money, not being brave enough and simply put, not taking the risk and jumping in. I would be lying to you if I told you it didn’t (and doesn’t still) scare me.

Overcoming solo travel fear is a real thing, and often that very fear is the reason why we do not take the leap and travel. Fear of it not being safe, of getting lonely or homesick, are just some factors. My biggest blocker was, and is, mental — the fear of not knowing what is on the other side and worrying about the things that could go wrong. What happens if I get stuck in the middle of nowhere? What if I get mugged? How am I going to talk to strangers?
